Personal experience has taught me that running always feels like less of a chore when accompanied by a couple close friends. At some point – or, perhaps it’s more relatable to say at some point on a daily basis – our body begins to react to the feeling of being pushed by throwing a tantrum. When our motivation reaches its breaking point like this is when a strong support system allows us to successfully challenge ourselves.
This October, the Perfect 10 Miler will be a challenge many women will overcome together. As the largest women’s ten miler in the nation, a colorful amalgamation of teams (over 100) join us every year to paint the central Jersey area with some girl power. These members not only bring a tremendous amount of enthusiasm to the race, but are also often seen helping fellow athletes make it to the finish line.
That’s why, this year, we’d like to highlight some of these women and their supportive teammates.
Meet Anne Klein, program director for Girls On The Run New Jersey East (GOTR) and passionate member of the team Run Around Princeton (RAP). Participating in endurance events like the Perfect 10 Miler is a great opportunity to combine her three favorite motivations: fun, fitness and friendship.
“It’s just a great combo of fun and fabulous women,” says Klein, “We love this race because it is such a celebration of all women who embody the Perfect 10.”
The squad that’ll be representing GOTR/RAP with Anne at this year’s Perfect 10 is strengthened by the variety of its members. It’s comprised of a fresh blend of GOTR staff, friends, supporters, volunteer coaches, wives of RAP runners and RAP runners.
Girls On The Run is an experiential learning non-profit program that utilizes the benefits of running to educate and provide women the tools necessary for a healthy, self-assured lifestyle. Participants are taught to make healthy decisions, resolve conflict and get along in a group.
For Anne, now an experienced athlete, both of her teams have flourished into much more than carpools and post-race coffee buddies. As they continue to team up for a variety of races, Anne has found it much easier to make it to the finish line with her team’s tremendous support and fun-loving spirit.
“I was drawn to the marathon because of the challenge. I like to see how far I can push my body, but, more than that, I’ve grown to love the people I’m with and really cherish the social time I have with my RAP running peeps!”
Anyone now wishing to join a team of their own may email Anne to learn more about getting involved with either Girls On The Run, or Run Around Princeton. The Perfect 10 Miler also welcomes over a hundred teams every year, making it a perfect opportunity to begin expanding one’s running circle. Use Anne’s story as motivation for you and your friends to work together to accomplish something special.
