Huntington Beach, CA – May 21, 2019 – One of Southern California’s longest-running traditions is flipping the script. Through a partnership with the Sundown Marathon in Singapore, the Surf City 10 Mile will feature a new Saturday night start time and calendar shift from October to September in 2019.
“Adding a new nighttime running event at this time of year is a perfect addition to the local calendar. Surf City is one of the most iconic and attractive destinations around the world, with all of the ingredients for this to become one of the signature races in the region,” said Alex Bennett, Vice President of the Surf City 10 Sundown. “Huntington Beach is a city that knows how to stage and host large-scale, world class sporting events and we are truly lucky to have such tremendous support out of the gate from the city and tourism industry to ensure this new concept is a home run in year one.”
September 21, 2019 is the date to remember for the 65th edition of the Surf City 10 Sundown taking place in Huntington Beach, CA. The splash of the surf, the clean salt air and epic sunset colored skies will follow runners for a Saturday night experience along 10-miles of traffic-free Pacific Coast Highway.
“The Sundown Marathon is very well established in Singapore and it’s a great opportunity for Huntington Beach to bring this new concept to our Surf City 10 Miler which will celebrate its 65th edition this year,” said Mayor Erik Peterson, City of Huntington Beach. “Running along one of the most famous surf breaks in the world at Sundown is sure to be an experience unlike anything in running and our community can’t wait to deliver in September.”
The longest running 10-mile race in the United States, the event will start and finish adjacent to the Huntington Beach Pier and offer all participant’s scenic oceanfront views along the 10-mile, 10-k and 5k courses. The races will begin at 6:30 pm with sunset to take place at 6:46 pm. Runners will span across the Pacific Coast Highway on Saturday night, September 21 in Surf City style and instantly become one of Southern California’s largest nighttime running events.
“One of the advantages of Huntington Beach’s ten miles of uninterrupted coastline is the ability to appreciate the colorful sunset in all its glory from so many different locations,” said Kelly Miller, President & CEO of Visit Huntington Beach. “Not only do these events showcase our beautiful City to the world as the competitors enjoy an unforgettable experience of running along the Pacific Coast Highway, but they benefit our local economy as fans and spectators will have a chance to witness this massive spectacle in the many bars, restaurants and resorts that oversee the oceanfront route.”
Thousands of runners will race along the Pacific Coast Highway for the 65th consecutive year as part of the Surf City 10 mile, 10k and 5k race in September. A rebranded website dedicated to the Sundown race has been launched at SurfCity10.com, featuring an exclusive 72-hour registration promotion. Each distance will have a limited capacity of entrants and an enforced time limit to complete the distance.
