Epson ProSense 307, $249

The battery life on this smart, training watch won’t leave you stranded

With 20 hours of battery life in GPS and wrist heart rate sensing mode, and up to 24 hours in GPS-mode alone, the just-released ProSense 307 is one of the key models of Epson’s new lineup of sophisticated and smartly priced GPS watches. The 307 tracks stride length and cadence, as well as a configurable variety of data fields, along with target-based pace, time, heart rate and interval options with alerts. It also has basic smartwatch features, including phone notifications, sleep and activity tracking and music control. In addition to the stellar battery life, another key feature is the stunningly crisp, low-glare electrophoretic (like an e-reader) display which has the added benefit of sipping very little battery. It is the easiest screen to see on the run, in all light conditions, of any watch I’ve seen this year, maybe ever. The bottom line: This is a no-nonsense training watch with good features, impressive battery life and throwback styling at a compelling price.
